Shrove Tuesday, the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday in the British Isles is called Pancake day, Mardi Grass in the US, and in Spain is Martes de Carnaval.
Ash Wednesday marks the begining of Lent, the period of 40 days before Easter, hence Shrove Tuesday is the last day to eat food made with ingredients such as sugar, fat and eggs, whose consumption is forbidden during the ritual fasting associated with Lent.
